Joseph Terbrueggen

Sunday morning Joseph Terbrueggen died of heart disease at St. Mary’s Hospital, where he had been only since the previous Friday. His death was learned of with sincere sorrow. Deceased was born in Nordewalde, Germany, March 11, 1839, and in 1864 he located in this city and engaged in business here. For about 30 years past he was a member of the brick manufacturing firm of L. H. Cordes & Co. In 1889 he was one of a company of three who put in the electric lighting system in our city and the company later disposed of the plant. In 1892 he was one of the incorporators the Merchants National Bank and was its first president, and at the time of his death was chairman of the board of directors of the bank. During his long residence here he always identified himself with the best interest of our city and took great interest in its general welfare.

He was a great lover of music and books and had one of the finest libraries in the city. For many years he was director of St. Henry’s church choir, was a member of St. Henry’s Mutual Benefit society, and ever since coming to our city was a most worthy member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church.

Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock his funeral took place from the home of L. H. Cordes in [406] Third Street to St. Henry’s Cemetery. A brother residing in Germany survives him, also a niece and two nephews in Cincinnati.

In the death of Mr. Terbrueggen our city loses one of its very best citizens. He was a gentlemen, every inch of him, and his pleasing, genial personality added good cheer to any company he chanced to be in. His death is universally regretted here and his influence for good in the community will be fondly cherished by all who knew him.
